From the 21st to the 25th of November, we had the pleasure to welcome 30 students from two high school of Trondheim in Norway and their teachers.
The European Section's students welcomed their penfriends during the week and we organised activities and visits.
This trip has been organised with Erasmus + and it is a school exhange : we are going in Norway at the end of January to see our penfriends again and visit the country.

Palm Trees and Power Lines by Jamie Dack

This movie deals with the summer of a teenage girl named Lea. She's 17 and during her Summer break Lea meets a man of 34 named Tom. They start a relationship. Lea life's is already difficult, her father is absent , she had an hard relationship with her mother and her friend and what this is what pushed her into the arms of Tom . She becomes isolated from her family and her friends. Then Tom and Lea decide to go on vacation together and it's at this moment that we realize the influence that Tom has on Lea. He asks her to prostitute herself for him… for love and she does it. After that she runs away from him to only to return to his arms.

I think this film shows the reality of some teenagers. Indeed, this movie highlights affective dependency, toxic relationships, manipulation, the kind of thing that happens more than often than we think. However some scenes of the movie were very difficult and uncomfortable to watch. Finally I think that the goal of this film is to raise public awareness for teenagers or just people on the fact that we should not accept everything for love, to be vigilant, to get know the person well before start a relationship because
like we say love is blind.

Review of Dual n°2

First of all, it's a science fiction thriller and comedy movie about a young girl named Sarah and she's sick with an incurable disease and only a 2% chance of survival.
She learns that she's going to die so she creates a clone in a medical center so her family are less sad.
But she then learns that she's not sick anymore and she has to fight her clone's for her own life. It's Sarah or Sarah double. They cannot both surivive and they must fight a duel.
After that she trains herself very hard for the fight but it's postponed because of the bad weather.
Her family prefer the double and the toxic relationship with her boyfriend, Peter, means that he leaves her for the double. his name his Peter.
With her clone Sarah decides to leave and gone into the forest to escape the duel but the clone poisons the real Sarah. So when she arrives at the fight, only the clone came so she is declared the winner.

This movie is about who really cares about us and makes us question what we value the most. The movie is described like unique, authentic and audacious.

Review of Emily the Criminal n°2

Emily the criminal is a Drama film written and directed by John Patton Ford.
The main character Emily is a young, determined woman with a criminal record and a lot of student debt. Emily has too many debts and no real job to pay it off so she ends up joining an illegal network which is not without consequences. In fact, this film takes us into the dark side of Los Angeles and more generally of the United States. The director shows us, through this film, that it is difficult for a large number of people to pay the university and a lot of other things and later to repay sometimes really high debts and therefore enjoy a good life. But above all, it highlights that the American Dream is only an illusion through a woman who will do EVERYTHING to get out of it and pay her debts.
I enjoyed this film, the action, the fact that the main character is an independent and determined woman. However, I didn't really like the ending, I was expecting a twist in the plot. I understand why she did it but I did not find her action courageous, it was for me a bit cowardly. I really feel that for her all that mattered was the money the rest was not important. But being selfish was perhaps her only chance of survival. She chose herself that's probably what anyone in her situation would do and maybe that's what is brave, she'll have to live with her action for the rest of her life.
Life does not always have a happy ending.

Review of Emily the Criminal

Hello, we are going to introduce you to a movie called Emily the criminal by John Patton Ford who is a thriller and a drama. So this movie is about the life of Emily Benetto, a young woman graduate who works in the restaurant business while waiting to find a real job to pay her student debts. She goes through several job interviews without success because she has a criminal record, until a colleague gives her a suspicious phone number. Emily finds herself embroiled in illegal business dealings where she also has a love story with the manager, Youcef, and sees her life derailed and plunged into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles. Obviously, this movie has a social impact, because it talks about the criminal and illegal world that Emily falls into, but also toxic love relationships like Emily and Youcef's, and finally today's society that values certain "social classes". To conclude, in our opinion, this film is really good and we really like it because, first of all, the actors play very well and we are really immersed in the story. Secondly, the subjects covered are deep and we think it's good to talk about them in the film industry. Thirdly, we discover the universe of the credit card scam, something not very well known. Finally, having been able to see and hear the director, this film is all the more touching because it's sometimes inspired by the life of the director. We recommend this movie because it is really good, and I think it can appeal to different audiences.

Review of Dual

The day at the Deauville American Film Festival on Friday, September 9, begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Center International de Deauville with a first film preview, "Emily the criminal" in which judges such as Eddy de Pretto were present.
Director John Patton Ford presented this film himself and answered questions from the audience. The pupils of the première euro history and terminal euro history and English LLCE then had free time under the sun, in order to see the second film of the day, two choices were proposed by the teachers in order to respect schedules, each personally choosing the movie they will watch:

– "Palm Trees and Power Lines" by Jamie Dack at 2:00 p.m. at the Deauville casino

– "Dual" by Riley Stearns at 3 p.m. at the Morny cinema in Deauville.

Having watched Dual, we are going to present this film more precisely.
This preview therefore took place in the small hall of the Morny cinema in Deauville at 3:00 p.m. The director of Dual, Riley Stearns has created a science fiction film mixed with thriller in which we are immersed in a futuristic vision of cloning.

Sarah, a young depressed woman, in the terminal phase of her illness, participates to a cloning program existing so that the entourage of the dying will not be devastated after the person's death.
So she will clone herself and teach her double how to live in the same way as her, to have the same tastes and the same life.
However, she's going to know later, a miraculous remission. But, her double already having an important place within her life, Sarah will wish to delete it but will have to do it via a dual where the original and the double must legally face each other until death, to know between both who is going to stay and become the original one.

The end of this film is quite unpredictable, we follow her journey all along and observe the damage caused by some scientific innovations.

We really enjoyed first of all, the representation of a female character for this movie and secondly the way they created her, more truthful and complex unlike the most part of the main female characters that look like each other. To put her forward on a topic about science fiction particularly captivating and a new concept was really pleasant.

This day in Deauville was really rewarding and entertaining for, I suppose, all of us. We loved it !

On the 9th september, our students had the chance to go to the Deauville american film festival.
They watched two movies in English with the presence of the realisator for one of them !
The students will soon write critics about the movies.

The movie night took place on Thursday after eating pizzas for the evening meal at 5:30 pm. It is very common in Norway to eat the evening meal around 4 pm. It may come early for us indeed, but this is very common down there.

We had a little break and we were offered popcorn just before we went into the movie theater. The high school in Trondheim is equipped with a theatre where films can be screened. This room has a capacity of about 100 people and looks extremely like a movie theater. That night, the film that was proposed to us is White Chicks. It's a famous American comedy directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. It tells the story of two young FBI agents who fail no mission. So they took the liberty of conducting an undercover mission to foil a plot, and thus save the two girls they are supposed to embody.

The movie was very funny !

At the end of the film, we went back to our respective families. It was a really good evening !

Nidaros Cathedral

Introduction:

Nidaros Cathedral is the cathedral of the city of Trondheim, Norway. It was built on the tomb of the King of Norway, Saint Olaf, who was killed during the battle of Stiklestad on July 29th, 1030. It is located on the banks of the Nidelva River and has Gothic sculptures on its facade. The cathedral was mainly erected during the reconstruction of the cathedral in the 19th century.

1/ the life of Saint Olaf :

Olaf Harldsson traveled in Europe when he was young, particularly in England where he has learned Christian religion, he has decided to be baptized in Rouen. Then, he wanted to unite Norway so he benefited that Denmark's king named king Canute was in England to make Norway independent. The new king set up in Nidaros also known as Tromdheim where he built at first a church. He decided to convert Norway people to christianism. He proclaimed himself king and made peace with the king of Denmark and married his daughter. He finally lost the Helgea battle and was banished before dying during the Stiklestad battle to have back his kingdom. After, they buried him next to the Nidelva, but

people wanted to honor him and decided to put him in the church, where a lot of pilgrims came. Finally it was burned and a second one was rebuilt, but after the war it was abandoned and was restored. Nowadays, a lot of kings have been crowned, the last one is Haakon VII.

2/ The Idea of building a Chapel / The story of the cathedral :

The cathedral of Nidaros was started in 1070 and its construction extends until around 1300. In 1328, a fire was declared and another burst in 1531. This destroyed the transept and part of the nave.

The reconstruction of the monument began in 1869 under the direction of several architects including Christian Christie and Henrik Bull, two Norwegian architects. The restoration officially ended in 2001.

Who are these two architects?

Christian Christie, born on December 24th, 1832 and died on September 13th, 1906, is a famous Norwegian architect who participated in several projects. He directed the restoration and preservation of many medieval monuments including the Church of Santa Maria, Håkonshallen. But his most important work is probably the restoration of the cathedral of Nidaros.

Henrik Bull, born on March 28th, 1864 and died on June 2nd, 1953, was a Norwegian architect known for his involvement in the restoration of Nidaros Cathedral. Among his most famous works are the Muse of History, the Ministry of Finance and the Nationaltheatret. Between 1912 and 1934 he was director of the École supérieure des arts industriels et de l'architecture.

3/ The Cathedral as we know nowadays/ Architecture :

This famous cathedral of Norway was first erected on the foundations of an 11th century basilica. On its west facade, you can admire several stone engravings, alcoves and sculptures built as finely as lace, located around the ornate rose window.

The interior of the cathedral combines different architectural styles including mainly its medieval architecture but also the Romanesque style with its transept, the Protogothic style with the nave and the 12th century chapel dedicated to Saint John and New Year's Eve and the Gothic style.

The cathedral features a sparkling rose window and splendid stained-glass windows that illuminate the interior, a tower with breathtaking views of the city, as well as crypts containing tombs dating from the Middle Ages. Finally, the altar front depicts fascinating scenes from the legend of Saint Olaf, which will inform you about this heroic Norwegian king, canonized and buried in the cathedral in 1031.

4/ The organs of the cathedral

The cathedral is composed of organs, a very large one, the first that was built, over the years they realized that there was a discrepancy of sound between what the people next to the organ were entangling and what the others heard further. Indeed, the largest organ in the cathedral has 9900 pipes.

A second organ at that time was built in the middle of the cathedral, so that there is no sound difference and that people hear the melodies at the same time. It is also hidden under arches so that it is not too visible.

In addition there is a third organ which is a gift from the Germans, it is moreover the only remaining organ given by the English, which is much smaller and is positioned on one side of the cathedral.

These organs therefore serve during Mass, on festive days, in big ceremonies, and finally in ceremonies within the cathedral that are important for the city or even the country.

5/ Cathedral's activities

Every day, you can visit the cathedral with guides. But this one is still active for religious life.

Every Sunday you can attend the high mass in the morning as well as the evening mass. You can participate in dinner prayer on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, carols on Tuesday, in a mass on Wednesday noon, and in vespers on Friday evening.

In summer, every afternoon there are pilgrim services.

Baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals can also be celebrated there.

The cathedral also offers organ meditations on Saturdays at the beginning of the afternoon.

Also, one of the weekends before Shrove Tuesday, children are invited to a carnival. For the whole family there is also the feast of the Holy Trinity to mark the end of Christmas with the cleaning of the crib, songs, sweets...

The cathedral offers other social activities to help the population, there are discussion groups and mourning groups…

In 2019, there was also the European Stone Festival.
